It features a clever design where an inner core is bonded to an outer ring, all held together by a secure locking system. The iconic polar bear reverse, a design by the talented Canadian artist Brent Townsend, has remained a constant, a symbol of the North that many Canadians instantly recognize.
For a long time, the obverse proudly displayed the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, including a special black-ring version issued in remembrance after her passing. And this is the part most people miss... As of 2023, the coin's obverse now features the effigy of King Charles III, a design crafted by Canadian artist Steven Rosati. This transition marks a significant moment in Canadian coinage history.
Originally, the Toonie was minted with a copper alloy center and a pure nickel outer ring. However, in 2012, the Mint upgraded its composition to multi-ply plated steel, incorporating advanced security features to enhance its durability and authenticity.
