Bruins' Big Move: Matthew Poitras Recalled, Coach Marco Sturm's Advice (2026)

The Boston Bruins' Bold Move: A Message for Matthew Poitras

In a recent roster shake-up, the Boston Bruins recalled forward Matthew Poitras from the AHL, and he's set to make his season debut on Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers. But here's where it gets interesting - Bruins head coach Marco Sturm had a clear message for the young talent.

"The key is for him to stay true to himself," Sturm emphasized. "I don't expect any grand displays; I just want to see him play his natural game, with an emphasis on defense. He'll be paired with Marat Khusnutdinov, so he'll have solid support. Today, it's all about playing hockey and nothing else."

With Elias Lindholm out due to an upper-body injury, Poitras steps into the lineup. At just 21 years old, he's already made an impact, with 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) in 33 games last season for the Bruins. This season in the AHL, he's continued to shine, with 24 points (8 goals, 16 assists) in 39 games.

As Poitras prepares for his NHL return, he believes his game has evolved, and he's confident he can make a difference for the Bruins. "I've simplified my approach," he explained. "I'm focusing on speed and agility. When I keep it simple, the rest falls into place naturally."

With 66 NHL games under his belt and six goals and 20 assists to his name, Poitras was drafted by the Bruins in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

The Bruins will host the Flyers on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET, in their last home game before the Olympic break. Then, they'll take their show on the road, facing the Tampa Bay Lightning in an outdoor game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Sunday.

And this is the part most people miss: It's not just about the talent on the ice; it's about the guidance and support they receive. Sturm's message to Poitras is a perfect example of this. So, what do you think? Is this a winning strategy? Or should coaches take a different approach? Let's discuss in the comments!
