The team behind the highly anticipated series 'Love Story' has an intriguing take on the early criticism they faced. In a bold move, they reveal that the scrutiny actually fueled their creative fire, pushing them to refine their craft.
On February 3rd, the stars of 'Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette' gathered at Carnegie Hall for the New York premiere. The show, an emotional rollercoaster set to air just before Valentine's Day, dramatizes the iconic relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, a couple who captivated the public's imagination until their tragic plane crash in 1999.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The team opened up about the initial backlash they received, particularly regarding the costumes and hairstyling in test photos. Paul Anthony Kelly, who portrays John F. Kennedy Jr., shared with USA TODAY that the criticism "made us work harder." He explained, "It gave more fuel to the fire of creating this. We had to dive deeper and ensure every detail was perfect."
In June, Ryan Murphy, the mastermind behind the series, released test photos that sparked a heated debate. Fashion writer Danya Issawi, writing for The Cut, argued that the costumes lacked authenticity, resembling modern replicas of '90s fashion. Murphy quickly clarified that these images were merely test shots for lighting and color, not indicative of the final costumes.
"That is not the wig we're using, that is not the purse we're using," Murphy told Puck. "It was a work in progress, but I released it to give our actors some breathing room from the paparazzi."
Connor Hines, the series creator, echoed that the early feedback allowed them to make crucial adjustments. For instance, after initial criticism of Sarah Pidgeon's hair, Murphy decided to have her dye her hair instead of wearing a wig. The show also replaced its costume designer early in production, as reported by Vanity Fair.
"Once we had it all figured out, we realized it was a blessing in disguise," Hines said. "Everyone looked fantastic in the end."
The passionate reactions from fans were heartwarming, indicating the public's enduring interest in this iconic couple.
"I was moved by how strongly people still felt about John and Carolyn," Hines added. "It's a testament to their enduring legacy."
Sarah Pidgeon, who plays Carolyn Bessette, described the criticism as a "new experience." She emphasized the importance of getting Carolyn's physical appearance just right, given her iconic status in fashion.
"If you watch the show, you'll see we nailed it," Pidgeon assured.
'Love Story' also stars Grace Gummer, Alessandro Nivola, Leila George, Sydney Lemmon, Constance Zimmer, and Naomi Watts. The first three episodes will premiere on Thursday, February 12th, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu.
So, what do you think? Was the criticism a necessary evil, pushing the team to create a more authentic portrayal? Or was it an unnecessary distraction from the creative process? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
